Monday is the last day that drivers who cross the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge can take advantage of the Thruway Authority's amnesty program, to pay off cashless toll violations without also having to pay the fines.
Motorists who have cashless toll violations have until midnight to pay off the full balance. If they do, the Thruway Authority will waive any associated fees and fines that have accumulated up with those violations.
According to the Thruway Authority, more than 160,000 toll violations have been resolved since it enacted the amnesty program Jan. 22 for the old Tappan Zee Bridge.
The program was developed after thousands of drivers, many without E-ZPass, complained they never received their bills or simply got them too late, after the fees had already started to multiply.
The amnesty program allows any motorist, even those who've had their car's registration suspended, to resolve their toll bill without paying fees.
All drivers have to do is have their license plate number and go online to the Thruway Authority’s website https://wwwapps.thruway.ny.gov/amnesty/ by midnight or postmark a bill to them by the end of the day. They say don’t go to the www.tollsbymailny.com where drivers without E-ZPass would normally pay their bill.
Local lawmakers are also pushing for the Toll Payer Protection Act which calls for drivers to receive their bills by certified mail, text or email.
