Peekskill hosts neighboring towns for anti-violence vigil

PEEKSKILL -

Peekskill hosted local residents and people from neighboring communities at a vigil at Riverfront Green Park Thursday evening to raise gun violence awareness.

Organizers said they also wanted to show love and support for the 17 victims of a school shooting in Parkland, Florida, the survivors and the community. As News 12 has reported, a gunman opened fire on Valentine's Day with an AR-15 rifle that he had purchased legally.

Peekskill Mayor Andre Rainey said he hopes local communities will band together and confront gun violence.

"I know they say it takes a village to raise a child -- it takes a county to raise a city," Rainey said.

Other communities joining the vigil were Buchanan, Cold Spring, Ossining and Tarrytown.
