Police: Stratford man tried to kill roommate with knife

A Stratford has been charged with attempted murder and assault after police say he attacked his roommate with a knife.
The incident happened Tuesday morning at a home on the 100 block of Gina Circle.
Police say David Newman lunged at his roommate with a knife while the victim was washing dishes. He was stabbed in the shoulder, wrist and arm, but police say the victim was able to fight off Newman by using a stun gun and kicking away the knife.
Police say the victim called 911 and Newman surrendered without incident when officers arrived. There was no word on what prompted the attack.
The victim, who is now back home after being treated at the hospital, says Newman has a history of mental illness, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. He says Newman had stopped taking his medication.
The victim tells News 12 that he was letting Newman stay in his home for the past couple months as a favor to his family.
