A Bronx high school student sprang into action to help save the life of a man in cardiac arrest.
In a matter of seconds, Anthony Rosa DeCampos was performing CPR on a man who was lying unconscious on the sidewalk at Brook Avenue and East 140th Street. He says he learned the lifesaving steps from his physical education teacher, Oswaldo Delcruz.
To date, Delcruz has taught CPR to more than 1,000 students at the International Community High School. He says he has even applied his skills to a real-life emergency by also performing CPR on a man who was in cardiac arrest.
Delcruz says it was that experience that made him decide to include CPR in his curriculum earlier in the school year.
DeCampos says he hopes to never have to use CPR to revive a loved one, but he's prepared just in case.
Since 2015, all high schools in New York have been required to provide students with an instructional and hands-on course on CPR, as well as training on how to use an automated external defibrillator, or AED.
