Thousands of New Jersey students are expected to take part in a nationwide rally Saturday calling for an end to gun violence.
It's called the "March For Our Lives,” and was organized after last month's deadly shooting in Parkland, Florida, where 17 students and teachers were killed.
Over 500,000 people are expected to take part in the main gathering in Washington D.C., but many local rallies will be held around the nation, including many in New Jersey.
“We’re fed up because there’s been so many [school shootings],” says New Jersey student Xavier Bery.
Students and parents who are attending the rallies say that they are advocating for stricter gun control laws and to ultimately end gun violence once and for all.
“People are stupid, trying to risk people’s lives or kill other people because they’re having some troubles,” Bery says.
The students attending the main rally in D.C. say that they are hoping to speak with some lawmakers about gun control legislation.
Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat who represents New Jersey’s 5th Congressional District, says that he will join the student-led demonstrations on Saturday.
“As somebody who has a 6-year-old and 8-year-old, I worry like most parents who want to make sure their kids, when they go to school, are safe,” the congressman says.
But gun rights advocates say that too much restrictive gun legislation goes against the Second Amendment.
The New Jersey chapter of the NRA and some gun owners will hold another rally in response to the March For Our Lives event. That rally will be held Monday outside the New Jersey State House.
