The Long Island Expressway is one of the island's many major roadways that is lined with potholes and cracks after the harsh winter, motorists say.
"I've had to fix my wheels...like three times," says Amir Khan, of Farmingville, who's among the motorists feeling the pain.
The cracks and crevices got so bad that the westbound LIE near Exit 62 was closed for an hour Thursday as Department of Transportation crews performed emergency roadwork.
Rashid Rehman, of 3 Brothers Auto Repair, says his shop has been fixing a lot of flat tires caused by potholes this season. He showed News 12 a Ford Mustang that he says was wrecked after hitting a pothole between exits 53 and 54 on the LIE during the last snowstorm.
"Hit a pothole, lost control, hit the median," he says. "The car is totaled."
Many Long Island residents have been calling on the state to repair the potholes before more damage is done. The state DOT says it's working on it.
"DOT has doubled the number of pothole crews, many working after hours," the agency says in a statement. "We’ve used an average of nearly 50 tons of asphalt daily to fill thousands of potholes on Long Island this season."
