Resident: Affordable housing in Yonkers changed my life
Posted: Updated:A resident of a new affordable housing building in Yonkers says getting an apartment has changed her life around.
Maria Ramos came to Yonkers after Hurricane Maria destroyed her home and much of Puerto Rico last September.
The 64-year-old says she owes her lovely, sun-filled apartment at Ludlow Commons in Yonkers to Westhab.
The nonprofit organization, which provides affordable housing in Westchester, celebrated the official opening of the modern, eight-story apartment building with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday.
"We have nice neighbors, we have nice security, and I feel comfortable here…It’s real nice,” says Ramos.
About 600 seniors took part in a lottery for a shot to get one of the only 70 apartment units at Ludlow Commons. On average, they pay about $200 to $400 in rent.
Ludlow Commons was built at a cost of nearly $27 million. It was financed with federal, state and local funding.
