Suspect in custody in stabbing of college student from Rye BrookPosted: Updated:
Police have taken a suspect into custody in connection with the fatal stabbing of a Binghamton University student from Rye Brook.
Joao Souza, 19, was stabbed to death at the Binghamton campus just after 10 p.m. Sunday, police say. The freshman engineering student was a member of the class of 2017 at Blind Brook High School.
Police say they believe Souza was targeted in the attack outside Windham Hall.
"Our sympathies go out to his friends and family, as well as to his classmates and peers," Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger said in a statement. "A suspect is in custody. I thank our Binghamton University Police, New York State Police and the Broome County District Attorney's Office for their quick work in apprehending the individual as quickly as possible."
Classes at Binghamton were canceled Monday.
Authorities have not yet identified the suspect, only saying they were also a Binghamton student.
This is the second homicide involving a student on the Binghamton University campus so far this year.
