A New City family has opened their home to two teenagers from Queens after the pair lost their mother to cancer this month.
Carol and Marc Ackerman and their three children agreed to take in Molly and Eli Kaye after their mother, Jamie, died from cancer earlier this month.
Amy Ackerman, the family’s oldest daughter, met the sister and brother at summer camp eight years ago.
Carol Ackerman then met the teens' mother, Jamie, at her Queens home for the first time this fall.
She realized how sick Jamie was, and how there was no place for her children to go after she died.
“We just had an instant connection that day. And I think some of the conversations we had about kids, about parenting, about life, about how we handled things, were very aligned,” said Carol Ackerman.
While there have been many adjustments, including new rooms created in an already crowded house, as well as fights over video games and bikes, they say that no one would have it any other way.
A friend of the Ackerman's set up a GoFundMe page to help raise money for the Kaye children's expenses.
