Some Bayville residents told News 12 Tuesday that they are against a plan to build a tunnel between Oyster Bay Town and Westchester.
Rena Bologna, of Bayville, says her view of the Long Island Sound would be obstructed by 10-story-high tunnel ventilation towers if the more than $50 billion plan is approved.
“You would see the worst part of the tunnel. You'd see the ventilation shafts and the pollution,” says Bologna.
The idea for a tunnel or bridge across the Long Island Sound isn't new. Various forms have been suggested since the 1930s. The idea was recently resurrected by Gov. Andrew Cuomo for an 18-mile tunnel from Syosset to the Rye/Port Chester area.
Tunnel supporters say it would reduce traffic and give Long Islanders another way off the Island. Others say the project is a waste of money that could be used to repair New York's crumbling infrastructure.
