Some Hudson Valley residents from Nepal could be forced out of the United States as the deadline for President Donald Trump to extend their temporary protected status approaches.
The Obama administration granted TPS to thousands of Nepali nationals in the United States following a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that killed nearly 9,000 people three years ago in the country.
But unless President Trump takes action, those visas expire on June 24.
Gyaljen Nuru Sherpa owns several Nepali Tibetan fusion restaurants throughout Westchester and raised $25,000 to help rebuild the homes of 16 relatives and a temple in his hometown following the earthquake.
Sherpa is among those concerned that the president will end TPS for Nepal, as he has done recently for Haiti, Honduras and El Salvador.
"I am very much worried about my people here and in Nepal," says Sherpa. "They are hardworking people, good people, but all they want is to work and support their families."
Sherpa isn't alone -- New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio sent a letter to President Trump urging him to extend TPS for 18 months for Nepal.
