WAYNE -

A New Jersey man has redesigned New Jersey’s state flag and flies it in his own backyard.

States like Texas and Maryland seem to have a lot of pride in their state flags – the flag design is often seen in clothing and other aspects around those states.

But flag experts say that New Jersey’s official state flag isn’t very memorable. Experts say that flags should be distinctive and not have any seals or lettering – something New Jersey’s flag does have.

Michael Carloni, of Wayne, designed his own version of the state flag and flies it during his annual Flag Day barbecue.

“I think New Jersey has such a deep history, why not represent it in as simplest design as you can,” Carloni says. “Maybe instill a little more pride.”

Carloni’s design represents New Jersey’s originally Dutch settlers and also represents the state’s status as one of the 13 original colonies. The flag also features three ploughs.

“The ploughs obviously represent our history as the Garden State,” Carloni says.

Carloni's redesigned New Jersey flag is one of about fifty he says he flies for his annual Flag Day event.
