MOUNT VERNON -

A man was fatally shot in the back of the head during a brazen broad daylight homicide in Mount Vernon on Monday.

Police say the shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. outside a house at 255 Union Ave. The house is currently vacant and up for sale.

Police also say no weapon was recovered and that no suspect is in custody. They spent part of the day canvassing the neighborhood and talking to potential witnesses.

Police believe neighbors should not be concerned for their safety and that there is no concern to the public.  "I'm very sorry to hear somebody lost their life, so sad. And hopefully these guys will be on top of things and get whoever this is," says neighbor Roxanne Brooks.

The victim's name has not been released, pending notification of his family.

Police are asking anyone with any information to text them a tip to Mount Vernon Police Department at 847411.
