4 HV candidates on list for interim attorney general

Posted: Updated:

State lawmakers released the list of 16 candidates who are seeking to be selected as the state's interim attorney general after Eric Schneirderman resigned last week amid physical abuse allegations.

On the list are four candidates from the Hudson Valley, including Westchester Democratic Assemblyman Thomas Abinanti, Rep.
Sean Patrick Maloney, Rockland County's attorney Thomas Humbach, of West Nyack, and Stony Point-based lawyer Michael Deiderich Jr.

Abinanti says he submitted his name to state legislators Friday to be considered for the interim state attorney general role. He says his broad experience as a public policy enforcer differentiates him from the 15 others who have applied for the interim role.

While Abinanti says there is no front runner for the role, acting state Attorney General Barbara Underwood, who served as Schneiderman's number two, is the default choice. However, he says she lacks the political experience.

"You need someone at the top who can make good public policy determinations. And at the same time, understand the extent of and the limitations of using the courts to determine those public policy determinations," he says.

The interim attorney general will hold the post until the end of the year.

A special panel of state legislators will begin interviewing candidates for the interim role Tuesday. Lawmakers have not given a timeline for when they will choose a candidate.
