The Nassau County Consumer Affairs Department is reviewing complaints about alleged shoddy work by contractors hired in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, and officials are urging affected homeowners to file complaints.

The county says it is now reopening files and reviewing 185 contractor complaints that have been filed since Sandy to see if violations should have been issued. County officials are also asking residents who haven't filed complaints yet to do so.

"Any resident who believes they have been taken advantage of by an unlicensed or licensed contractor should know that they are not alone in this fight and we are here to help you," says County Executive Laura Curran.

Officials say they will check out any complaints to see if they can find violations and possibly pass criminal activity on to the district attorney's office.

Margaret Bounsingore, of Baldwin Harbor, is among those who say they fell prey to unscrupulous contractors.

"My contractor did shoddy work -- he didn't finish the job, and he took off with money and ripped me off, and I have no recourse," says Bounsingore. "He is now out of business working under a new name and in bankruptcy court. His subcontractors want money from me -- they have all these loopholes to get out of paying in doing the work, and it's unfair."
