The city of Yonkers is hoping to move forward with a plan to build a new public school in Glenwood.
The decision comes just a week after city officials announced plans to lay off hundreds of teachers and other school staff, but some think it will help the city.
City Council Real Estate Chair Corazon Pineda Issac says a new school on Ravine Avenue would help ease overcrowding in Yonkers, especially if it comes with new public housing.
“We're talking about senior housing, workforce housing, that's going to be affordable, that's going to have income requirements,” Pineda Issac said.  “I think that's good for that neighborhood."
The City Council will vote Tuesday on moving forward with a real estate firm that could look into developing the new school.
The city is reportedly considering building the new school at a vacant lot at the corner of Ravine Avenue and Point Street.
Residents who live in the area say a new school could help transform a neighborhood that is currently overrun by vacant lots and loiterers.
City Council officials say there would be a public vetting process and an environmental review before any construction in the Glenwood neighborhood would begin.
