Historical marker unveiled at Monfort Cemetery

The Town of North Hempstead unveiled a historical marker at Monfort Cemetery in Port Washington Monday -- marking the burial sites of 154 of the town's earliest settlers.
Some of the headstones date back to the 1730s. Four of them mark the graves of veterans of the Revolutionary War -- one of whom was the town's first supervisor.
"Today we're going to be preserving their legacy," said the current town supervisor, Judi Bosworth. "The legacy of the revolutionaries whose work really led to the birth of the town of North Hempstead."
The cemetery has been a town landmark since 1985.
