New Rochelle schools increase security after online threat

NEW ROCHELLE -

Extra security was again in place at New Rochelle schools as officials continue to investigate an alleged threat made over social media.

The decision for extra security was made after a Snapchat post over the weekend alleged there would be a shooting at either New Rochelle High School, the Isaac E. Young Middle School or Albert Leonard Middle School.

School officials say they know which student made the post. They are not deeming it as a threat and do not plan on any arrests.

This was the fourth incident involving alleged threats to New Rochelle schools in the past two weeks, prompting the superintendent to send a letter late Monday afternoon alerting parents and students that police will sweep all schools in the district before reopening Tuesday morning.

In addition to extra police presence, security was tightened today with bags being searched and attendance limited to students taking Regents exams or those who had scheduled activities.

Monique Bah has a son who attends New Rochelle High School, and says she had no qualms about bringing him to school this morning. "I have a lot of confidence; I have a lot of faith in the school, the security, the staff, the police presence." Students, however, aren't happy about the changes this year. "Honestly, it just feels like a prison lately, you can't go anywhere or do anything," says student Madelyn Magistro.
