Black bear sightings becoming common in Tuxedo

TUXEDO -

Two bear sightings were reported Monday, one in Orange and one in Rockland.

A crowd gathered in Haverstraw to get a glimpse of one of the visitors.

Residents had spotted the bear earlier running through their streets. They said they were surprised to see the bear camping out in the backyard for hours. It also ate some food, stared at onlookers and climbed a fence.

Police were at the site with tranquilizers, waiting for the right time to subdue the animal.

On Friday and Monday, black bears were spotted in a neighborhood near the Tuxedo/Sloatsburg border.
