More than 100 employees at Hawthorne Cedar Knolls will be laid off in the coming weeks as plans to close the embattled school move forward.
According to state labor records, 107 workers will be losing their jobs as the site closes in phases.
The layoffs come after the residential treatment center announced its closure this summer.
Lawmakers and community members support the closure, following a number of incidents involving students leaving campus without permission and causing trouble in the community.
In January, one teenager was arrested after she allegedly burglarized a home near campus.
Resident Sally Zimmer says the school didn't belong so close to a residential area. Zimmer says she feels bad that people are losing their jobs and hopes they can be placed in other facilities.
The Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services operates the center, which caters to troubled youth. Two other facilities will remain open.
A spokesperson for the group says, "We are actively engaged in helping to place staff who are affected in roles in the new facility or elsewhere within our agency."
The residential treatment center is expected to close by the end of the summer. Students will be transferred to a new program in the Bronx.
