A fundraiser was held in Freeport honoring a Parkland school shooting victim originally from Dix Hills.

On February 14, Scott Beigel ushered several students into his classroom at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.  As he was closing the door, Beigel was shot six times.

The geography teacher and cross country coach was one of 17 people killed at the school, as he held the door open for 24 students to escape to safety.

Gun control activists Emma Gonzalez and Cameron Kasky, who were also Beigel's students, were both in attendance.

“I'm just part of the generation of young kids who Scott inspired to be a better person,” said Kasky.

Beigel’s father said his son always knew how to bring out the best in people.

"He would always look out for the person who was the underdog. He would take the person who didn't seem to fit in and help them fit in," he said.

The fundraiser for the Scott Beigel Foundation will help send underprivileged children to camp.
