Community leaders throughout the city are responding to the government policy that resulted in separating immigrant children from their parents at the U.S./Mexico border.

Dr. Karen Daughtry and her husband Rev. Herbert Daughtry spoke out at the House of Lord Church, saying that detained families should not be separated.

“I understand that protecting our borders is necessary and that guidelines to do so must be put in place,” said Daughtry. “But not at the expense of our most vulnerable citizens."

Many leaders across the country say they are concerned about the psychological impact on separated children.

While the couple recognizes that President Trump has since signed an executive order that will keep detained parents and children together, the Daughtrys say that it has not solved the immigration problem.

Rev. Daughtry says that there needs to be a comprehensive plan to address the issue of immigration.

“I hope that I live to see the day that America becomes what America can become,” he said. “The withering past is no match for the budding future."
