Protesters demand shutdown of gas at Indian Point Power Plant
Protesters gathered in Croton-on-Hudson Sunday to call on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to shut down the Algonquin gas pipeline at the Indian Point Power Plant, following the release of a risk assessment.
The state released the assessment on Friday, and critics say it reveals that both the old and new pipelines pose a serious risk to the area.
“If this was to explode, it would take out all of New York City,” said one protester.
The protest took place outside of a private fundraiser for Democrat Pete Harckham, who is running against incumbent Terrence Murphy for state Senate.
Gov. Cuomo was expected to attend the fundraiser, but protesters later discovered that he was unable to attend at the last minute.
Harckham says he supports the protesters. “This is the energy and lifeblood of our party,” said Harckham. “This is democracy in action.”
Protesters say that Gov. Cuomo’s failure to appear will not hamper their demand for the governor to cut gas to the plant immediately.
The plant itself is slated to close in 2021 under an agreement that was reached last year.
