Driver gets 3 to 9 years in prison for deadly crashPosted: Updated:
A judge sentenced a Yonkers man Tuesday to three to nine years in prison for killing one of his passengers in a reckless driving crash and injuring another last summer.
Renzo Yance, 22, admitted to driving his BMW at speeds above 100 mph on Central Avenue on Aug. 26, 2017. But Judge George Fufidio rejected a plea deal last month that would have imprisoned him for two to six years.
Fufidio said that after reviewing Yance's pre-sentencing statements that he said lacked adequate remorse, he believed a harsher punishment was in order.
News 12 has reported that one of his passengers, 19-year-old Nina Cordero of Yonkers, was riding without her seat belt. The crash ejected and killed her.
Her fiance suffered lesser injuries.
Yance pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and third-degree assault. He could have withdrawn his plea and gone to trial.
In court, Cordero's father Edwin Cordero looked directly at Yance as he described the toll of his daughter's loss.
You have taken everything from us," he said. "We are forever broken."
