Public hearing held on proposed composting facility in Cortlandt Manor

Many residents voiced their support for what could become Westchester County’s first commercial composting center at a public hearing in Cortlandt Manor Tuesday night.
Supporters tell News 12 that if the proposal is approved, it would help reduce the costs of food waste recycling and make the county greener.
"This is something that people are really interested in doing, but there's no facility nearby," says Anthony Carbone, the owner of Sustainable Materials Management.
While the board agreed that this would be a good initiative, members had concerns regarding thetraffic of commercial and residential vehicles into the facility.
They also expressed worries of the facility reaching capacity, leading residents to leave trash on the street.
Currently, all Westchester residents who participate in composting must drive to Ulster County.
A new resolution addressing the board's concerns will be presented at its next meeting on August 28.
