Warning issued about scammers posing as O&R reps

PEARL RIVER -

A warning was issued Wednesday for Orange & Rockland utility customers that phone scammers posing as O&R representatives are on the prowl.

The imposters threaten to turn off customers' utilities unless they receive cash payment via Green Dot MoneyPak cards.

At least four customers have been scammed out of amounts from $500 to $3,000.

Experts say this kind of scam has been around for years but right now is a prime time for it.

"It usually accelerates around a holiday period or around a vacation period when people are distracted, when people's guards are down, they're relaxing, and when they're most vulnerable,” says O&R spokesperson Mike Donovan.

O&R is asking anyone who gets a call from a scammer to call customer service at 1-877-434-4100 to verify the contact.

The Clarkstown Police Department is investigating and asks that the public be vigilant.
