Mamaroneck proposes plastic bag fine

Posted: Updated:
MAMARONECK -

Mamaroneck is taking steps toward starting an initiative to stop the use of plastic bags.

The town is proposing a fee for shoppers who use single-use plastic bags to encourage people to think about using reusable bags instead.

Officials say they don't know how much the fee will be yet.

Town officials are in the beginning stages of the proposal, but they would like to follow in the footsteps of Suffolk County, where similar legislation is in place.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and local officials have also considering adopting this idea at a state and county level.

Students in Mamaroneck have created designs for reusable bags to be distributed to people who live in and visit the town.
