MIDDLETOWN -

A police chase in Orange County turned fatal when the suspect’s car smashed into a home overnight.

Police say an officer saw a black 2000 Lexus GS 300  sedan commit a traffic infraction in the area of Cottage Street and Railroad Avenue in Middletown around 12:50 a.m.

The driver of the Lexus tried to flee the traffic stop and sped southbound on East Avenue onto Fulton Street.  The driver lost control in the intersection of Academy Avenue and Sterling Street, first striking a telephone pole and then a concrete porch in front of 8 Sterling St.

The 35-year-old male driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other vehicles or people were involved or injured during the incident. Also, no one lives at the residence.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending proper notification to next of kin.

An autopsy will be done by the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine an exact cause of death.  It does not appear that the driver was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
