YONKERS -

A Yonkers senior center has a new name to honor a longtime local lawmaker who was known as a champion for seniors.

The Coyne Park Senior Center was renamed in honor of Bernice Spreckman, the longtime Westchester County legislator who passed away last year.

Spreckman was a powerful force in Westchester politics as she served as a county legislator for more than 20 years representing the 14th district.

She died last November at the age of 82, just over a year after giving up her seat due to poor health. The Republican also served on the Yonkers City Council for three terms.

The Yonkers native was a big advocate for seniors. She sponsored an annual talent show for them every year, which included lots of singing and dancing.

“She was very, very influential with the seniors, children, the whole gamut. She gave back to the community. She was a very, very good person,” says Yonkers Parks Commissioner Anthony Landi.
