Sen. Charles Schumer is calling for boosted efforts to prevent child drownings.
The Democratic senator released a new report that says toddler drownings are on the rise. According to the findings, young boys are drowning at more than twice the rate of girls.
Schumer is calling on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to develop an outreach campaign that will reach more parents and halt the tragic trend of drowning deaths.
According to Sen. Schumer, drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children under age 5, and three children drown every day in the U.S.
"It is tragic accidents like this, of toddler kids, that put a giant hole in your heart and should spur us to do all we can at the federal level to keep such young lives from being lost to drowning," he says.
