A new species of tick has recently been found in various spots around Westchester.

County health officials want to make avid trail hikers and pet owners aware of the East Asian longhorn tick, which before being spotted in parts of the U.S. was only found in Asia, New Zealand and Australia.

Experts say that so far, it has not been associated with any known human disease.

A bite from the tick could make someone feel feverish and dehydrated or cause difficulty breathing.

According to the Westchester County Health Department, outdoor enthusiasts should wear light-colored clothing, long-sleeved shirts and pants. It’s also important to use bug repellent at all times of the day.

The Health Department recommends those walking or jogging to stay on the pavement and use trailways. It says for those who have a pet, make sure they stay off the grass.
