Some Yonkers residents say a firefighter who pleaded guilty to sexual assault charges should be fired from the city’s fire department.
In May, Gustavo Bravo was sentenced to six years of probation and ordered to register as a sex offender. Fire officials told News 12 that Bravo was suspended pending the outcome of the department's disciplinary review.
Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano released a statement saying, “The city cannot tolerate any firefighter who is a registered sex offender and therefore not allowed near schools, playgrounds or other places where young people congregate.”
He added, “How can you respond to a school if you are not allowed anywhere near it?"
The president of Local 628, the firefighters union representing Bravo, says this is a personnel matter and everyone is entitled to due process. Bravo has been in the department since 2011.
Yonkers recently fired another firefighter for misconduct. In that instance, the probationary firefighter was charged with felony and misdemeanor charges related to alleged assaults at a bar in June.
Another city firefighter was also charged in that incident and was placed on administrative leave.
