Tuckahoe police warn about internet dating scamPosted: Updated:
Tuckahoe police say criminals are using dating sites to target victims.
In one case, they say a man claimed he worked at Chase Bank on Main Street and made off with $5,000 after offering incentives if the victim opened an account.
Police say the victim waited in the parking lot next to the bank, only to be told her date is running late. The victim was then told an intern will come out, collect her cash and create the account for her.
A person did come out and take the cash, but they didn’t return.
Another scammer claimed he was an investor and was able to get a victim to buy gift cards with money from a fraudulent check.
Both cases occurred using the app Plenty of Fish. The incidents are under investigation.
