White Plains mayor looks to help Walmart workers find new jobsPosted: Updated:
White Plains Mayor Tom Roach says he's working with city companies to help find new employment for some of the roughly 400 workers who work at the local Walmart store, which just announced it will close on Aug. 10.
"For some people, this might be a better opportunity to train and get into a career path that might fit better into what they had in mind for themselves than what they are doing today," he says.
Industries like the medical field are in dire need of applicants, according to the mayor. So workers who switch fields could find themselves in better circumstances as the retail industry struggles nationally.
Walmart Inc. says its decision to close the Main Street store has to do with its financial performance.
