Gymnastics coach indicted on underage molestation chargesPosted: Updated:
A Ramapo gym coach accused of sexually abusing students maintains his innocence.
Former gymnastics coach, Joseph Lewin, who is accused of molesting several of his young students, pleaded not guilty to charges in the Rockland County Courthouse Tuesday.
The 67-year-old had no comment leaving the courthouse after his indictment on eight felony counts of sexual abuse and sexual conduct involving underage children.
Ramapo police arrested Lewin back in May after five former students came forward with stories of abuse. Officials say Lewin engaged in sexual contact with at least seven underage kids at two gyms in Suffern and Hillburn between 2007 and 2014.
In court , the judge had the Port Chester resident sign five temporary orders of protection to keep away from the five students he once coached.
Lewin's attorney says his client is innocent and that they plan to go to trial. "We should see that these individuals should not be called victims and the real victim will be coming out at trial -who the victim is," says attorney David Goldstein.
Lewin is expected to be back in court on Aug. 14.
The former coach was released from jail on $10,000 bail.
