Suffolk officer helps deliver baby for 3rd time in 5 years
A Suffolk police officer helped deliver a baby for the third time in the past five years early Thursday morning in Port Jefferson Station.
Officer Jon-Erik Negron and two colleagues, Officers Brian Cann and Karl Allison, rushed to a 911 call around 2 a.m. in Port Jefferson Station.
When they arrived, they found Keri Fort in her bed and in labor. She was two days past her due date. She said she began having contractions around 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Terryville Fire Department paramedics Gina Brett, Kevin Bader and Chris Myers also arrived to assist.
"She didn't even know what she was having," Bader says. "That was kind of cool for me, because I got to tell them if it was a boy or a girl."
Fort gave birth to a healthy baby girl 24 minutes after the officers first arrived.
Last summer, Negron helped deliver Bryce Pappalardo in the kitchen of a Mount Sinai home. Bryce was born on the kitchen floor with his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck. His father untangled the cord, but the newborn wasn't breathing,
Officer Negron found a syringe and cleared fluid from the baby's airway. Now Bryce's parents say they consider Negron their guardian angel — and they made him their baby's godfather.
