A hometown hero was honored Saturday for his courage in the Parkland school shooting nearly six months ago.
The town of Huntington dedicated the corner of Half Hollow Road and Hart Place to Scott Beigel, who died shielding students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in February.
The Dix Hills intersection will now be known as Scott J. Beigel Way.
"We had decided when Scott was killed, we were going to celebrate his life, not mourn his death,” said Biegel’s father, Michael Schulman.
Schulman tells News 12 that Beigel had been able to get about 20 to 26 kids into his classroom, but as he was turning to close his door, the gunman came up the stairs and shot him six times within three seconds from five feet away.
17-year-old Cameron Kasky was one of Beigel’s students. He along with other friends and family came for the street dedication.
"As long as people live on the street and as long as people go across the street, they'll have him in our hearts as everyone else has, so it's really nice to see,” he says. "You'll see there's a lot of people that owe their character to him, and his memory lives on."
Local lawmakers, including Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul also came to support the family.
Beigel's mother Linda says we can all learn from how Scott lived his life.
