Two men were sentenced Friday after pleading guilty to manslaughter in a deadly explosion at a Bronx marijuana grow house in 2016.
FDNY Battalion Chief Michael Fahy, a Yonkers father of three, was killed after he was struck by debris while responding to the explosion.
Julio Salcedo, 36, of the Bronx, will spend up to six years behind bars, and 33-year-old Garivaldi Castillo, of Manhattan, will spend up to four years in prison. Both pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter charges last month.
FDNY Lt. Richard Ruebenacker told both defendants they're directly responsible for Fahy's death, saying the chief gave up his life to save theirs.
"Your actions helped rip from the city one of its most genuine, most humble, most caring, most considerate public servings who has ever served in the role," he said.
The court says Castillo operated the grow house, while Salcedo assisted in the operations. Both defendants gave statements in the courtroom, apologizing to Fahy's family and his department for what they had done.
Dawn Florio, Salcedo's attorney, called the sentencing a fair result.
Members of Fahy's fire battalion told the court no jail time would ever be long enough to undo the chief's legacy on both the brotherhood and community at large.
