Officials are making sure residents know that alcohol is not the only thing to avoid before getting behind the wheel.

State and local police are stepping up patrols through Labor Day to push a new "If You Feel Different, You Drive Different" campaign.

It emphasizes the fact that drugs also impair reaction time and judgment and should never be taken before you drive.

"Marijuana, which is increasingly available recreationally all throughout the U.S., caused people to have impaired judgment and slow reaction times, yet we hear from members of the community that they think it's safe and they think it's legal. It's not. It's unsafe, it can kill somebody, and it's illegal," says NHTSA Deputy Administrator Heidi King.

Officials say drivers should always plan ahead, especially when celebrating on Labor Day weekend.

They say to designate a sober driver, use public transportation or call a cab.
