Communities along the North Fork are coming together Friday to help a 14-year-old boy battling cancer.
Dylan Newman, of Southold, has been fighting a rare bone cancer called Ewing's sarcoma. He finished the eighth grade this year but played varsity baseball in Southold.
During a game in late April, he felt a pain in his hip that turned out to be a tumor. He stopped playing baseball and a few weeks ago underwent a 12-hour surgery to remove the tumor.
"They took the tumor out and took my fibula and reattached it to my hip, so now it grows back together," Newman says.
He must now undergo physical therapy and learn how to walk again, while continuing to fight the cancer. He must go through 17 rounds of chemotherapy. He begins his fourth on Monday.
Through the treatment, Newman's friends and family have been by his side, and the community has been doing what it can to provide support.
Community members have been wearing green "Team Dylan" bracelets. Organizers say the bracelets are being sold to help with the family's medical bills.
A fundraiser was planned for Friday night at Claudio's Clam Bar in Greenport.
