Malloy announces federal approval of disaster declaration for May tornadoes

Gov. Dannel Malloy announced Monday that his request for a major disaster declaration after the state was hit by severe storms in May was approved for public assistance for New Haven and Fairfield counties.
The request came after tornadoes and severe weather devastated parts of New Haven, Fairfield and Litchfield counties on May 15.
State agencies and municipalities in New Haven and Fairfield counties will receive financial assistance from the federal government to help pay for cleanup costs.
In a statement, Gov. Malloy said, "These storms had a devastating impact, causing significant damage that is still being cleaned up and repaired months later. I thank the federal government for continuing to be a partner in these efforts."
The governor's request for assistance for individuals remains under review.
