Experts are offering up advice on how to deal with allergies during the back-to-school season.
The start of the school season tends to mean an outbreak of hay fever, according to allergists at ENT and Allergy in Sleepy Hollow.
Dr. Mark Davis-Lorton says parents can keep symptoms under control with medication or allergy shots and lifestyle changes.
"If the kids are allergic to pollen, they'll be carrying pollen on their clothing and hair, so if they spend a lot of time outside have them change their clothes prior to getting into their bedroom," Dr. Davis-Lorton says.
He also tells parents that showering at night is helpful because it washes pollen out of the hair, which means it won't end up in the bed overnight.
Allergists also recommend parents pay attention to food allergies to peanuts, eggs, milk, soy and wheat.
Dr. Davis-Lorton says it is important to teach kids how to recognize what their allergens are, remind them not to share foods with other children and always have treatment available.
Doctors suggest to come up with an allergy prevention plan before heading back to school.
