Newburgh man sentenced for deadly stabbing

GOSHEN -

A Newburgh man was sentenced today after pleading guilty to manslaughter charges.

Christopher Smith, 44, admitted to fatally stabbing William McMahon, 50, in the neck in 2017 and then burying him in a large planter. McMahon's family says he was helping Smith renovate a house.

Smith was sentenced to 12 years in prison and five years post release. The DA's office had recommended 20 years behind bars.

McMahon's sister says the justice system failed her family. She says she would have liked to see a tougher sentence.

The victim's family also asked the judge for Smith to be held in solitary confinement for five days on the anniversary of his death.
