Activists protest controversial Algonquin pipeline

Lawmakers and activists gathered in Buchanan Friday to highlight safety concerns they have about the Algonquin pipeline.

Environmentalists claim the Spectra Energy natural gas pipeline runs dangerously close to critical safety infrastructure at the Indian Point nuclear power plant. The pipeline has been a source of a number of protests from activists for years.

In July, gubernatorial hopeful Cynthia Nixon called for the shutdown of the pipeline while on the campaign trail in Peekskill.

The pipeline carries gas north from Pennsylvania to New England while cutting through the Hudson Valley.

The mayor of Buchanan says officials at Spectra have been very transparent about the pipeline project.
