Some residents in Parkchester are wondering what happened to the historic terra-cotta statues that were part of the neighborhood's landscape for generations.
The statues have been part of the Bronx's history since World War II. But they're now turning up broken, dismantled or completely destroyed.
"It's tragic for the history of the area," says Sharon Pandolfo-Perez, of the Parkchester Project.
Pandolfo-Perez runs the Parkchester Project's Instagram account, which documents the statues. She says new construction at the apartment complex near Hugh Grant Circle may be to blame.
"You can work around them," says Carmelo Vargas, of Parkchester. "You don't have to knock them down."
The latest statue to vanish is a fire marshal, which stood across from a fireman on the apartment complex.
Pandolfo-Perez says she's hoping to bring attention to the issue. Others say the loss of the statues, which do not have landmark status, takes away from the beauty and character of the neighborhood.
The property manager of the apartment complex had no comment.
