Peekskill police take guns off the street through buyback program

Peekskill Police Department took guns off the street Saturday through its gun buyback program.
Residents in the area were encouraged to anonymously hand in their guns to the department and in turn were given cash up to $450.
Community members were asked to turn in any type of gun they have – such as shotguns, assault rifles, handguns, and pistols.
Police say absolutely no questions would be asked and their only priority is safety.
“It doesn't matter if it's a small cheap gun, if it's a very expensive gun if it's a little rusty it doesn't matter,” says Don Halmy, the Chief of Police in Peekskill.
The program was so successful they have run out of money to give out, but Peekskill police want to remind residents that they can hand in their firearms at any time.
