Twenty Yonkers kids got to ride home in style Tuesday thanks to Mayor Mike Spano's Bicycle Donation program.
The program has provided 200 refurbished bikes to Yonkers kids since it began seven years ago. The bikes are donated by residents to help kids who aren't fortunate to have one of their own.
For Zhonelle Saunders, getting a bike she can call her own was a big deal. She took home the purple princess bike she has always wanted.
"I never got to ride one and this looks so cool," says Saunders. "My favorite bike would be pink and purple and this bike is sick."
Mayor Spano is urging residents to look in their garages or sheds for any bikes they no longer use.
"Anybody out there, a Yonkers resident you know who really wants to make a difference in a young person's life who quite possibly couldn't afford to get that bike, you'd be able to make that life healthier and happier," says Spano.
Saunders and others who received bikes say they want to thank Mayor Spano and those who donated.
