Ex-trustee accused of stealing from summer camp released from prison
After spending just two nights in Rockland County Jail, a former Spring Valley trustee has been released.
On Monday, Vilair Fonvil was sentenced to one year in jail for corruption charges. He was found guilty in November on charges he stole $11,000 from a summer camp for children.
Fonvil's attorney says he filed an appeal of the conviction with the state appellate court.
"The appellate division implicitly decided that his argument was worth considering and they decided to release him in the meantime," said Charles Holster, Fonvil's attorney.
As part of the agreement, Fonvil also had to surrender his passport to the District Attorney's Office.
The release is only temporary. Holster says if they grant the motion permanently it would mean that Fonvil would be out for the duration of the appeal process, which could take up to a year.
The District Attorney's Office says it opposes Fonvil's release.
If a judge denies the motion, Fonvil could end up back behind bars. Holster is hopeful the stay will become permanent while the appeal is pending.
