Police: Driver hit man in wheelchair, then sped away

Bridgeport police say a driver struck a man in a wheelchair and fled the scene.
The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. Friday at Park and South avenues.
Police say 55-year-old Dwayne Taylor was crossing the street when a burgundy vehicle slammed into him. Taylor remains in the hospital, recovering from injuries not considered life-threatening.
Taylor says the manual wheelchair that was destroyed in the crash was his only form of transportation and that he now has no way to get to his regular doctor's appointments or the pharmacy for his medications. He's been a paraplegic since age 7.
The victim's family is asking for the public's help in getting him an electric wheelchair so he can regain his independence.
Police ask anyone with information to call them at 203-581-5100.
