Westport police warn about sign regulations

The Westport Police Department is reminding residents about regulations pertaining to temporary signs in town.
Police say during election season there is an uptick in vandalism and theft of these signs.
These crimes can lead to criminal charges, including trespassing, criminal mischief, and larceny.
Town property includes traffic islands and road rights of way.
Signs can’t be placed on the grounds of schools, town halls, on trees, utility poles, or on anything that obstructs traffic.
Signs on private property require owner approval.
